A god roll is a weapon whose random perks match the combination the community considers best for that weapon and that mode. It is not one objective answer — it is consensus, and it differs between PvE and PvP.
Most legendary weapons drop with randomized perks: two trait columns plus barrel and magazine columns, each rolled from that weapon's fixed perk pool. Two copies of the same gun can play completely differently — one Fatebringer reloads itself on kills, the other wastes both trait slots. That is why the community talks about rolls, not weapons.
Experienced curators maintain public wishlists of the rolls they recommend chasing, with notes explaining why. Aggregating many curators shows where they agree: the perks present in every recommended roll of a weapon are effectively essential; perks that appear in some rolls are strong alternatives. Shard or Keep's god-roll pages are built exactly this way, from more than 180,000 curated rolls.
Damage perks that need multi-kills to activate dominate PvE; consistency perks that improve range, handling and accuracy dominate PvP. Most weapons therefore have at least two god rolls, and curator notes usually tag which mode a recommendation targets. A roll that is trash for your playstyle can be a keeper for someone else's — the notes matter as much as the perk names.
Enhanced perks (on Tier 5 and crafted weapons) are stronger versions of their base perks and count as the same perk when matching a wishlist. The reverse of a god roll also exists: curators explicitly flag combinations not worth vault space, and those trash-roll flags are how an appraiser can tell you to shard with confidence rather than staying silent.
